7/15/09: Biding Beijing Farewell...

After Domo was returned to his SB2 group...they all bid farewell to Eason, our fearless bus driver, and the wonderful city of Beijing.

We all took away more than just souvenirs from the Capital of China; we also took with us a new found knowledge of a culture's past & a glimpse into its promising future.

As we rose into the sky over Beijing and headed southeast towards new adventure in Shanghi, our exploration appetites whetted with asian anticipation, we could never had imagined the travel treasures that awaited us in the buzzing streets, tranquil gardens, and hillsides filled with tea...

7/14/09 During the Chinese Acrobat Show...DOMO WAS ABDUCTED!!!!!

Domo will be receiving the abduction photos soon...He'll post the whole story, including photos of the ransom notes and the reunification with Jim as soon as the police are done with the handwriting analysis and checking for latent fingerprints in the lab.

Domo...In Transit!

7-14-09 Tiananmen Square, Pharmacy (TCM-Traditional Chinese Medicine), Forbidden City, Hu Tong, Summer Palace, Pearl Factory...

Lots of great walking today.  It was great to get to get to spend a lot of time with our boots on the ground exploring the streets and the sights.
The sight of Tiananmen Square filled like a sea made of umbrellas was impressive!  This day we honed our bartering skills and found many of our best finds to remember the trip by.

The pharmacy's ascetics were as impressive to Domo and I as the science.  The Chinese pharmacist who taught us about the basics of TCM had the best english accent I have ever heard from a non-British born.

The Forbidden City was filled with history and excited sightseers, Chinese and foreign alike.  The original bricks and paint was accented with refurbished materials that showed how it looked back when it was first built.

The Hu Tong village was a step back in time, yet there was no question that it was a current and active community.  Just another example of China's ever-present contradictions and contrasting cultural divides and convergence.

The Summer palace was a testament to Beijing's determination to enjoy a water retreat, amidst the fact that they a "waterless" city.  This did not stop their building a system to transport water for personal and civic enjoyment.

The Pearl Factory provided an up-close look at the extraction of pearls as well as the desire to sell them...

July 13th: Temple of Heaven, Jade Factory, The Great Wall, Dragon Valley, & The Cloisonne Factory

On our first adventure we learned that the trip was going to involve two travel partners that would be joining us for our romp through China: Heat & Moisture.  Heat & Moisture met up with us on the first day and had a great time with us until bidding us farewell in Shanghi...

Our time in the Temple of Heaven was spent viewing the Temple and watching the local retirees dance, practice Tai Chi, kick around a shuttlecock/hack-e-sack, play paddle ball, and generally hang-out.

The Jade Factory was an introduction to Jade quality and the main motivating factor of our Chinese hosts (Governmentally speak, not Eason & Emily): Commerce!

The Great Wall hike was life changing and a reaffirmation that the world holds many great wonders both made of stone and flesh.
Rick and Marissa shared their moment with us all...setting an emotional tone within our group that lasted the trip, and which I am confident will last a lifetime.
The mist and the clouds made the going up easier...but far from easy! And, the smiles and connections shared with the international travelers gathering at the top made the huffing, puffing, and sweating a badge of honor...we were all HEROS!

The rainy Dragon Valley boat ride and escalator extravaganza was sort of like getting to go through a tourist village on a day it was supposed to be closed!  We had the place to ourselves and were cooled off by a pleasant rain, which started as soon as we got on the boat...and stopped as soon as we disembarked.

The Cloisonne Factory was more commerce mixed with mind blowing artisanship & attention to detail: Part shopping / Part living museum!
